Paid vs PayPal Zettle & Square

Square and PayPal Zettle are complete payment platforms — and switching to one means opening a new merchant account and moving your business onto their rails. Paid takes the opposite approach: it turns the Stripe account you already have into a point-of-sale.

Should I switch from Stripe to Square or PayPal for in-person payments?

If you already process online payments with Stripe, you don't have to switch anything to start taking payments in person. Paid connects to your existing Stripe account, so your customers, products, payouts and reporting all stay exactly where they are — in Stripe.

Square and PayPal Zettle are excellent products, but they are their own payment processors. Using them means a separate merchant account, a separate dashboard, separate payouts, and your sales data split across two systems. For a business already on Stripe, that's a real cost in admin — before any fees are counted.

With Paid there's nothing to migrate: download the app, connect Stripe, and start charging. The fee is a flat 0.99% per transaction on top of Stripe's standard rates, with no monthly fee.

When does Square or Zettle make more sense?

Honest answer: if you've never used Stripe and want an all-in-one retail platform with branded hardware, Square or Zettle can be a great fit. They're different tools for different jobs.

But if Stripe is already at the heart of your business — your website checkout, your invoices, your subscriptions — then adding a second processor just to take in-person payments splits your money and your data in two. Paid keeps everything on Stripe: Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android, Bluetooth card readers, a product catalog, tips, taxes, payment links and QR codes, and team members with roles.
